The Florentine designers (and twins) behind the label open up about style, inspiration, and why the caftan means so much.

SO OFTEN, clothes take on a new life because of the memories they hold, or the people behind their creation. It could be your grandmothers fur coat that appeared each winter paired with a string of pearls, or a dress your mother made you for a special occasion. Or, a piece created by a designer who infused every stitch with their creativity and sense of style. All clothes with emotion attached. All clothes that are more than fabric strung together by needle and thread.

When you stumble upon a designer who imbues their creations with spirit or is the perfect embodiment of their brand, a piece that they've designed suddenly becomes that much more exciting. It has personality; it has vigor. And when you wear it, it reminds you of them. Such is the case with Caftanii Firenze, an Italian label created by two very chic, Florentine twin sisters, Ludovica and Ginevra Fagioli, who formed a label out of their affinity for one piece in particular, the caftan. A favorite of icons like Diana Vreeland and Grace Kelly, the caftan represents a subtle luxuriousness that invokes the languid beauty of Morrocco (where it was first created). It was also enough of a blank canvas for the twins to put their own unique stamp on the staple, adding embroideries and special details. "Ginevra and I are twins (just like the ones intertwined in the logo) but with completely different characters,” explains Ludovica from their base in Florence. “At the end of our studies (economics for Ginevra and international law for me) we felt the desire to create something together, to give birth to a common project that takes into account our emotions and the experiences gained through all of the travel we’ve done together. Travels that permitted us to discover and deepen our passion for fabrics, embroideries, traditions and that certain elegant, charming, and casual lifestyle that we try to express through our creations."

"Fashion is everywhere. Travel is probably what made us curious and drew us towards fashion.”

The label, Caftanii Firenze—a line of caftans and simple but elegant dresses— launched quietly in 2014 and was inspired by a passion for exquisite fabrications and the caftans the twins' mother wore. "We were six years old, and in the afternoon after school and homework we used to play with crepe paper, scotch tape and glue, creating colorful dresses and showing them to the whole family before dinner. Such a funny memory!" The twins and their friends, all equally as chic as the other, bring the pieces to life. With a passion for the industry from a young age, they set out to create pieces that aren’t just comfortable, but suitable for everyday; be that at work, at dinner, running errands or dancing the night away on a remote beach. "Fashion is everywhere. Travel is probably what made us curious and drew us towards fashion. We can’t discover enough textiles, fabrics, undiscovered boutiques and dresses, and vintage markets. We love to observe how women of different origins and cultures love to dress up," explains Ludovica. "We wanted to offer a charming and timeless way to wear an everyday, seasonless piece whose delicate lines make women feel the true meaning of beauty and elegance. Our mission was to communicate a kind of sensual and casual femininity without any excess, just by being oneself."

Each piece is produced, hand sewn, and hand embroidered by artisans in Florence using only Italian-made, natural textiles (the twins are fastidious about creating clothes in the highest quality fabrics), and the line includes more than caftans. Dresses, robes, pajama sets and jumpsuits help to make up the range, and are reflective of the twin’s own personal style. “We have similar styles, however each of us has our own ‘must.’ For our caftans, Ginevra loves lightness and necklines; whereas I love ¾ sleeves and back buttoning,” says Ludovica. “I’m extremely minimal and monochromatic. I always feel comfortable wearing all black, blue, or white, whereas Ginevra is definitely ironic. She loves mixing different colors and pieces together. She wears caftans with colorful flat sandals and bracelets! I love to wear them with nothing but ballerina flats or sneakers, paired with a timeless and iconic bag during the daytime, then adding some retro jewelry for nights out.”
