The chic new label that creates beautiful, glamorous essentials.

CHEAP THRILLS are fun, but luxurious, beautifully made clothes are the stuff fashion dreams are made of. BY.Bonnie Young, the newly launched label by designer Bonnie Young, is full of pieces that make it easy to look great. Comprised of easy to mix separates, the line launched early in 2016. Wide leg trousers in silks and wool, slouchy leather jackets in reworked leather (you can reverse them, taking them from elegant to cool), and silk maxi dresses form a collection that’s so concise, so chic, and so beautifully put together that you could easily throw out your entire wardrobe and start again with just these.

Young began her career at Ralph Lauren in 1992 before moving to Donna Karan, where she worked alongside the designer at Donna Karan Collection (half of which she spent as Creative Director) for sixteen years, helping shape the iconic label’s direction as a shopping destination for women looking for smart, elegant pieces to complete their wardrobe. “At Donna Karan it was my job to inspire her and create things that spoke to her soul,” says Young. “BY.Bonnie Young is all me. As my mentor Donna has had an incredible influence on how I have evolved as a designer.”

"Women from the '70s have always been an inspiration for me—Cher, Jerry Hall, Jacqueline Bisset. they weren’t scared to wear what they wanted and didn’t care what people had to say about their sense of style."

After she left Karan in 2007, Young launched a children’s line, but soon found that mother’s were buying as much of it for themselves as their children. “I found that nearly 30% of the collection was being sold to women to wear themselves. At the same time, I was making pieces for my close friends and myself. We would go out and I'd find myself selling off my back at parties. After some time I figured why not do a proper collection that is available at retail,” explained Young. "I don’t make anything that either my friends or I wouldn’t wear. I'm offering a collection that is wearable, yet still very unique and glamorous. The pieces are meant to live in a woman’s wardrobe forever and are appropriate no matter what age.”

When it comes to the collection, less is more for Young. Trousers appear somewhat simple but drape perfectly. Dresses and jackets are constructed in supple yet sturdy knits and luscious furs—the types of garments that instantly transform an otherwise unforgettable item of clothing into something magical. It conjures up thoughts of the inimitable style icons of the past—Lee Radziwill, Bianca Jagger, Audrey Hepburn—women who made the simplest outfits look fantastic. “Women from the '70s have always been an inspiration for me—Cher, Jerry Hall, Jacqueline Bisset. They weren’t scared to wear what they wanted and didn’t care what people had to say about their sense of style," says Young. "I love platforms, high-waisted and wide-legged pants, and furs thrown over the shoulder. Luxurious yarns and fabrics speak to me as well, and are usually where my thought process begins. For Fall 2016, my original inspiration came from bullfighters and menswear fabrics. Hence the oversized and bejeweled sleeves and pants. The metals mixed with menswear fabrics and somber menswear colors were very important to me. I loved the gold against grey because it was more unexpected. The palette, despite being inspired by menswear, exudes glamour and luxury. The BY. Bonnie Young woman loves glamour with an edge. She has a powerful point of view and sensibility.”
